Xylotek Honoured by Chamber of Commerce

Wins Business of the Year Award for firms with under 20 employees

February 24, 2009, KITCHENER, ONTARIO – Xylotek Solutions, a full-service, IT consulting firm based in Kitchener, has been honoured by the Kitchener Waterloo Chamber of Commerce, taking the award for Business of the Year for firms with under 20 employees. Xylotek was one of nine companies to receive awards at the Chamber’s annual gala on February 19th. A total of 84 individuals and organizations were nominated.

“We are a company that is driven by providing quality customer service,” said Douglas Grosfield, President and CEO of Xylotek. “It’s been like that since we first opened our doors, but we have also matured as an organization. In these days especially, it is very important to maintain special relationships with not only your customers, but bankers, suppliers and distributors.”

Grosfield said that the current recession actually presents opportunities for the firm as companies tighten their belts, and look to outsource some, or all, of their IT operations to Xylotek.

“This recession is an opportunity for us to gain market share through attrition and acquisition. A lot of companies are thinking about IT support, and they see that over the long haul they might be better off with us.”

Xylotek was established in 2005 by two local systems engineers – Grosfield and Michael Topp. A third partner, Chris Pickard, joined them one year later. The company now has 12 employees. Last fall Xylotek was recognized as one of Canada’s fastest growing companies, taking the #40 spot on the PROFIT HOT 50, which is the definitive ranking of Canada’s Emerging Growth Companies. The ranking, which was published in the October, 2008 of PROFIT Magazine and online at PROFITguide.com, ranks young firms by two-year revenue growth.

That growth has continued through the economic downturn. Grosfield said that Xylotek, whose current financial year began October 1, 2008, is on track for a 35% increase in revenues over the same period last year. It is also on track for a 60% increase in profits over the same period.

“In a very short period of time, Xylotek has compiled an impressive record of service to their clients and community,” said Joan Fisk, President and CEO of the Greater Kitchener Waterloo Chamber of Commerce. “They have quickly emerged as a local and national leader in the highly competitive IT sector.”

To be recognized as Business of the Year (Under 20 Employees), a firm must be a member of the Kitchener Waterloo Chamber of Commerce, and in the past year must have demonstrated innovative and proactive leadership, measurable success as a business and employer, act as a good corporate citizen, and have made exceptional contributions by promoting community betterment.

Xylotek is involved with the Waterloo Region Immigrant Employee Network, which provides internships for immigrants possessing trade skills. As well, it is involved with co-op programs at the University of Waterloo, Wilfrid Laurier University, and Conestoga College. All three institutions offer four-month, work terms for students as part of their programs of study. In addition to being a member of the Kitchener Waterloo Chamber of Commerce, Xylotek is a member of the technology organization Communitech, and attends programs run by both groups. It actively supports such charities as the Children’s Wish Foundation, Child Find Canada, BEAT (Bikers Ending All Types) of Cancer, Prostate Cancer Ride for Dad, and the CIBC Run for the Cure.
